So I’ve made an executive decision to plop RTX 2070 video card into one of the workstations.
Bought a splitter
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Upgraded PSU to 800+ watt unit.
Received a banged up video card - some visible damage on mounting brackets, but shouldn’t cause any performance issues. USPS did a number on this package.
Plugged everything in. Monitors don’t show anything. Fans take off for a second and then stop.
From what I am reading, fans only spin when card is hot. So I have no idea if the video card is working or if it’s not getting enough power... or if the card is damaged.
I’ve ordered some sata to 6/8 pin power adapters. Coming tomorrow... but I am guessing card is damaged.
What say you? How do I tell if the card has enough power?
Shouldn’t I see some boot up pictures from a video card that might not yet have the drivers installed? I think it should.

If you’ve upgraded the PSU, it should come with the necessary cables to support two graphics cards. Splitters generally aren’t recommended for high power devices.

your PSU should come with the proper cables to power it up... and yes, the fans won’t spin until it reaches a certain temperature (50/55/60C)
you can play a game with the side panel off or run something like furmark to see how loud it gets :D

I have not been able to get anything to show on monitors. kind of hard to run anything... that’s why I am wondering if the card is busted/ not enough power/ I am doing dumb

The psu is modular swappable with one lever.
The cable that came with computer originally only comes with 8 pin PCIe power cable, but the card has 8 pin and 6 pin. Therefore I got the splitter.

are you using the PSU PCIe cables or the splitter you bought?

Is there a built in card? If so, is that displaying video when you power up?

Near the PSU is a little PCB to which PCIE power cable is attached. It only has 8 pins and the card wants 6... AND 8 pins. That’s why I am using the splitter I bought.
I Even tried getting rid of my splitter and just running it with original cable. Nothing.

Not sure. It might.. but the video card I pulled out was showing booting up stuff and even operating system stuff. This thing. Nothing.
To be fair, I assumed since the fans werent spinning, there was a problem. I may have quit prematurely but I’ll try again

Your 800W power supply will be more than enough, and should have enough cables so you don’t need adapters.
Fans going for a second, then stopping is fine, as you say it shouldn’t be hot enough to need them yet.
Do you have on-board graphics or a second graphics card? You might be able to use that to boot into W indows (with the card installed in another slot) and see if Windows is recognizing it.

The fans will usually spin up on power up/ bios post, just a short burst.
As others said the new PSU should have all the cables you need and plenty of power.
If it is the only video device it should run off a generic driver. I f the MB has a video port, use that to install the drivers and reboot to the new card.

Yeah. that’s also a good idea. though in my experience two very different video cards don’t like each other but I can try just to see if it’s recognized and maybe install drivers.
I’ll try.
What I am confused about though is that the card wants 6 pin and 8 pin plugs. That’s why I bought the splitter cable. I don’t have any idea how much power it provides. I saw someone on youtube install this card into this machine and they used sata power adapters.

Your PSU should have cables which end in a 6 pin connector with an extra 2 optional pins dangling off the side. Those are for GPUs. High power GPUs require the two rails from the PSU to supply the required power.

No. My psu is a modular one. Without one single cable. All the cables are in the case already - attached to motherboard or other PCBs.
I pulled out 600w PSU and pushing in 800W PSU

Might be the case a very long time ago when drivers were causing collisions, these days not so much. Dedicated GPU drivers are explicitly designed to work with other graphics, specifically the onboard for power saving measures.
The other corner case I’ve seen, especially on some corporate machines is that the BIOS is designed to shut off the graphics lanes at the BIOS level if the onboard is enabled, or vice versa. You might want to check there as well.

you got any other machine you could test the
card in? try another PCIe slot?

I will be trying all that and a bag o chips tonight. I was just curious to know if there is a sure way of knowing if card has enough juice to run. If my splitter is in fact giving it enough power, it should show me boot up sequence stuff. I got nothing. I will try running old card with this card to see if I can spy on the new card and see if PC finds it. That still doesnt tell me if the card has enough power to run

Here’s a relevant discussion about those two cables:
With the only catch is that you have a server PSU and they are talking about general consumer PSUs. Just make sure on the label that your 12V rail has sufficient power.

Thanks for looking this up.
I would agree with that, but on the flip side, I should be seeing computer boot up screen. Not much load. Doesn’t require much power. Nothing like a demanding video game would.
I have sata to 6 and sata to 8 pin adapters coming. I’ll try those tomorrow.
I just don’t know if the cable that came with computer is putting out any power at all or if it’s just there for decoration.
There should be boot up screen displaying... even if OS demands too much to show.

I have sata to 6 and sata to 8 pin adapters coming. I’ll try those tomorrow.
Just be VERY careful about these. Moulded SATA power connectors = firestarters.

I actually would’ve just stuck to the 8 to 6+8 splitter in your case . Molex push-in connectors are much safer than SATA ones.
Like the video I mentioned, usually the case on using connectors to limit applications applies to _consumer_ PSUs, it’s not really a concern for yours, so using a splitter just to get the connector is just fine. I’m fairly certain your 12V rail is beefy enough to handle the tiny resistance of a splitter.

Yeah... well.. somehow no display still so either card is busted... or no power coming.
I am gonna test with sata. at least this way I will know there is enough power coming in... and if still no display, I can say for sure- card is crap.
I have another card coming with just an 8 pin plug. That in theory should work more better. Amazon already said they will replace if need be. I am just testing all scenarios.

You have a multimeter? It’s easy to test if there’s power coming from the plug, just poke yellow to red and black to black on the Voltmeter setting and see if you get 12V.
